The Santo António do Estoril Church, also known as the Parish Church of Estoril, was built by the Order of São Franscisco on the site where, in 1527, a wooden chapel dedicated to São Roque once stood.
The 1755 earthquake almost completely destroyed the church building, and its reconstruction began three years later.
In the current church, the painted ceiling by Carlos Bonvalot stands out, as do the tile panels depicting scenes from the life of Saint Anthony.
Reception
With origins in the 17th century as a coastal military fortification, it was part of a defensive line designed to protect the capital, Lisbon, from potential enemy invasions.
It was purchased by the great-grandfather of the current owners, who transformed it into a summer residence inspired by Tuscan neo-medieval architecture, blending fairytale castle elements with the original military structure.
The flag of the Sovereign Order of Malta is flown at the fort, which serves as the official residence of its Ambassador to Portugal.
